Some Things Not to Keep in Your Glove Compartment

For Your Safety, There Are Items You Should Never Leave in the Car’s Glove Box

Every vehicle has one, that glove compartment on the right side of your dashboard, and while it comes in handy for storing certain items, there are things you should never leave there.

To keep our friends in the Chicago area safe, here’s our list of glove box no-nos from your friends at New Cats Auto Parts. Some of the things on our list are pretty obvious, but others may not be so apparent.

Personal Papers

The glove compartment of your car acts like a magnet to thieves, and if they break into your car, that’s the first place they’ll look for anything valuable. So, never leave papers there containing your name, address, or any other information that might be used for identity theft.

Vehicle Title

You might think of keeping your title in the glove box for quick reference purposes, but you should not. It has a lot of personal information you don’t want thieves to get, and in the wrong hands, your title could be used to create fake titles.

Receipts

These also have a lot of personal information, like your name, address, and sometimes, even your credit card number. All that information is a treasure trove for identity thieves!

Driver’s License

Like those receipts, your driver’s license contains a mountain of valuable personal information and should never be left in the glove compartment. Always tuck it away safely in your wallet or purse.

Valuables

Valuable items like electronics should never be left in your car and certainly not in your glove box. Remember, there’s a good chance your auto insurance won’t cover valuables that might be stolen from your vehicle.

Batteries

You may think it’s a good idea to keep a supply of batteries in your glove compartment for emergencies, but that’s not a good idea. Summer heat speeds up the deterioration of batteries, and some overheated batteries can start fires. Instead of stashing batteries in the glove box, just remember to change the batteries in things like your flashlight regularly so that it will work in an emergency.

Garage Door Opener

Leaving this item in your glove box is almost as useful to thieves as leaving them your front door key. Never do that!
