If you don’t consider yourself a car expert, there’s a good chance you don’t know your way around the parts of your vehicle. While most of the time, the knowledge can be left up to the professionals, you should be familiar with some auto parts, too. We’ve listed a few here for you.

Battery

Your car is not able to do anything without its battery. It is located under the hood, and has plus and minus signs on it. If your car dies, it is beneficial to know how to jumpstart your battery.

Brakes (caliper, pad, rotor)

Brake calipers can either be located in the front or back of the car, and squeeze the brake pads to the rotor to slow your vehicle.

Your car’s brake pads cushion the wheel attached to the calipers. When your brakes make a loud screeching noise, the pads most likely need to be replaced.

Lastly, your rotor is located alongside the caliper and pad, and is important to replace often as your car loses the ability to brake when the rotor is damaged.

Axles

The axles are attached to the wheels and transfer power from the engine to the wheels. If you feel your car shaking or vibrating, it is most likely because your axles need to be repaired or replaced.

Radiator

The radiator is located under the hood near the engine. It’s function is to prevent the engine from overheating and requires certain amounts of coolant.

Muffler

The muffler is located between the engine in the front and the tailpipe in the back, and its function is to keep your car quiet as you drive around town.
